3. A 36
year old lady is undergoing a blood transfusion for losses incurred during a
cardiac valve replacement. The blood she received was fully compatible and had
been checked before administration. Within one hour, the lady was noted to have
a temperature of 37.40C. She was otherwise symptomless.
4. 8 days
post-transfusion, a 56 year old gentleman was noted to have a very low platelet
count on a routine blood test. On further questioning it was revealed that that
patient found himself to be bruising easily. What is the treatment of choice?
5. A 22
year old male was involved in an RTA. He had been knocked off his bicycle and
had suffered internal bleeding. He was taken to a hospital which was very busy.
He urgently needed a transfusion and due to staff shortages, this was given by
an inexperienced nurse who wasn’t sure exactly how to set up the infusion line.
The blood was seen to be flowing to the patient. The patient almost immediately
developed severe shortness of breath and then collapsed.
